Be sure your contractor can provide you with proof of licensure. There are many types of licenses. Be sure all of the appropriate licensing is in place before accepting a bid.

Business License - Almost anyone can obtain a business license just by paying a fee; but surprisingly enough, many people try to operate illegally save a few dollars. State, county, and city licenses are required for each city or area where work takes place.

Professional Services Permit - The Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries requires licensing in each category of work performed. These licenses are obtained by application and testing.

Landscape Design - This license is required for anyone charging a fee for any design of landscapes, big or small.

 

Setting of Landscape Plants - This license is required for anyone charging a fee to install any plant material, including: sod, grasses, annuals, shrubs, trees, etc…

 

Tree Surgery - This license is required for anyone performing professional tree surgery, including cable & bracing, cavity filling, and wound cleaning

 

Ornamental & Turf Pest Control Supervisor - This license is required for anyone commercially applying pesticides (anything used to kill or deter pests) to treat: weeds, insects, fungi, bacteria, disease, etc…

 

 

Nursery Dealer Certificate - The state requires anyone buying or selling plants to keep this license current.

Arborist Certification - This is a voluntary certification, but is becoming a requirement by many customers that are aware of the importance of involving a Certified Arborist. Certified Arborists are trained arboriculture (the art and science of tree and landscape care).
